LINCOLN, N.H. — Business has turned around for many ski areas in New Hampshire after mild weather led to a slow start to the season. Recent snow in the mountains and cold weather has brought more skiers to the slopes, according to several ski areas. For the first time this season, Loon Mountain is 100 percent open, thanks in large part to nearly a half-foot of fresh powder last weekend. “With cold weather and snow approaching, it’s great,” said Ralph Lewis, director of operations for Loon Mountain. Skier Tahsin Ergin said he and his family made the trip north from Windham. “There’s no snow down there, but there’s plenty up here,” he said. With nearly three-quarters of all New Hampshire students on school break, ski industry officials said this is the perfect time for a turnaround. Industry group Ski NH said gains have been posted at resorts in the past few weeks, although overall for the season, turnout has been down 15 to 25 percent. But Alice Pearce of Ski NH said hopefully, the doom-and-gloom headlines from earlier in the season are behind them. “It all depends on what March brings us, but there has been improvement in year-to-date business levels versus a year ago, and during the month of March, we hope to see that continue,” Pearce said. While matching last year’s record-setting season may be difficult to do, some resorts said it’s not too late to make a strong push. “We could make a huge comeback in the next three to four weeks,” Lewis said. “We really could.” More snow is possible this week in parts of the state, and ski areas said they’re hopeful that will bring more skiers to the slopes.
